In this dispute, the husband, suffering from COPD, is seeking MAID.

His wife argues that proper procedures are not in place regarding MAID applications. The appeals court judge asserted that the case presents no exceptional circumstances warranting a stay.

Compassion means more than suffering with others…it requires alleviating the suffering of others. The authors, both members of the clergy, assert that it is the dying person who may consider spiritual matters for themselves. It is not up to others to impose their views.

How California doctors are fixing how we die The Mercury News By Lisa M. Krieger, Sept. 7, 2020

In states where MAID is legal, the public assumption is that those deaths are peaceful and speedy. However, the dying trajectory can be impacted by many factors – the strength or weakness of the patient’s heart; a history of drug use; the ability of the intestinal tract to absorb medications. The American Clinicians Academy on Medical Aid in Dying is working to develop more effective protocols.
